We Are Space Coast Discovery
With over thirty-five years in the books, Space Coast Discovery formerly Space Coast Early Intervention Center has made a name as one of the most forward-thinking schools in Brevard County, with countless success stories from students and parents alike. We know that the success of each child isn’t solely dependent upon the teachers or administration. That’s why we take a community approach to learning—partnering with parents to spark hope, answer questions, and provide resources for learning outside the classroom. Because while we are educators, many of us are also parents; and at the end of the day, we all just want what’s best for our kids.

Greg Smith
Greg Smith brings decades of leadership expertise in non-profit social services and for-profit organizations to his new role as CEO of Space Coast Discovery, a K-8 grade school and infant-VPK preschool in Brevard County. The school serves a diverse population, including children with special needs, typical learners, and gifted students. With expertise in multi-disciplinary team management, operational efficiency, grant writing, fundraising, strategic planning, and fostering community partnerships, Greg has significantly improved and expanded services to children.
Greg’s passion for ensuring all children receive equal learning opportunities, regardless of their abilities, inspired him to join Space Coast Discovery. Many students, particularly those on the Autism Spectrum and those with other neuro-diverse learning challenges, require healthcare services such as speech, physical, and occupational therapy to enhance their social skills and learning abilities in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Greg’s strength lies in developing holistic, inclusive solutions that will empower the parents and teachers to collaborate effectively for the child’s best interest.
A U.S. Army Veteran originally from Louisiana and Native American of the Cherokee Nation, Greg has lived in Brevard County for 35 years. He holds a Professional Masters in Healthcare Informatics from the University of Central Florida and a Master’s of Health Services Management from Florida Institute of Technology. In addition, he received a Bachelor’s in Economics with a minor in Sociology from Louisiana State University. His education and experience align perfectly with Space Coast Discovery’s philosophy which combines a compassionate, caring environment with state-of-the-art technology, innovative teaching and creative, positive energy.

Our Friendly Staff
Jailexi Diaz
Director
Jailexi Diaz is the School Director at Space Coast Discovery with nearly 10 years of experience in early childhood education. She previously served as our Preschool Program Director for two years and holds a National Administrator Credential and CDA. Jailexi is passionate about creating a nurturing environment for children, supporting her team, and building strong relationships with families. She is also a proud mother of three who enjoys spending time with her family.
SANDY EMERICK
FUND DEVELOPER
Sandy is the school Fund Developer. She was introduced to the school over 27 years ago and has been dedicated to fundraising efforts ever since. Her goal is to educate her community with fun charity events. She believes giving back to her community is good for the soul and encourages others to do the same. She is also involved with other charities such as Candlelighters of Brevard and the Central Brevard Sharing Center. She resides in Rockledge with her husband Doug, and when not working, she’s busy with her kids & grandkids.
Haley Gaume
Assistant Director
Haley is honored to serve as the Assistant Director at Space Coast Discovery, bringing over six years of dedicated experience within our school community. Previously, a Lead Teacher in our specialized 3rd and 4th-grade programs, Haley has also served as a Teacher Representative on the Board of Directors, providing a unique perspective that balances classroom needs with school-wide growth. A commitment to individualization, hands-on learning, and professional development drives her. She is dedicated to fostering an environment where both students and educators thrive through resilience and evidence-based instruction.
Elena Stein
Office Manager
Elena moved from Palm Beach County in 2007. She attended Eastern Florida State and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Management. She has over 20 years of experience in customer service. She has been passionate about Space Coast Discovery since her ASD son started attending in 2021. She has been part of the PAC (parent action committee) going on her 2nd year and when a job opportunity came up it was a no-brainer for her. Elena is excited to be on this journey as we expand the school into something bigger.
Erica Webb
HR Coordinator
Erica serves as the HR Coordinator and brings a strong foundation in business administration to the school community. Originally from the DMV area, she relocated to Brevard County in 2020 and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources from Strayer University. Erica has a personal connection to the school, as her son has been part of the community since 2021. As a parent of a child who receives support for speech and attention challenges, she has experienced firsthand the impact of a nurturing and structured learning environment. She believes the staff are the heart of the school community and is honored to support them in her role while contributing to the continued growth and success of the school.
Stacy Bailes
Support Staff
Stacy joined the Space Coast Discovery team in March 2024. She was first introduced to our school in 2020 when enrolling her two children and finding them in that perfect place where they feel loved, valued, and a sense of belonging. She brings 20 years of experience in human resources and retail leadership with her. She has a vast knowledge of the educational funding and eligibility processes for our community and plays a pivotal role in the scholarship management process. She has a passion for helping others and ensuring each family finds the right financial support and resources available.
ASHLEY MULLIN
Director of First Impressions
Ashley joined Space Coast Discovery in May of 2020 to share in the pivotal role of Director of First Impressions. She moved to Florida from New York where she earned her Bachelor’s of Psychology degree. Ashley has many years of office experience and is looking forward to continuing her growth here at Space Coast Discovery. Ashley truly believes in our mission here and is extremely proud to be part of our caring team.
Tammy Preston
Support Staff
Tammy is a native Floridian from South Florida and moved to Brevard County with her family in October 2019. She started working for Space Coast Discovery at the front desk, in August 2023. She attended Miami Dade College, as well as worked in the corporate office of a large fast-food company for 38 years in Marketing. Tammy’s love for children and her passion for helping others in need, made it easy to work on projects for children’s organizations, especially when she worked with a special needs school.
Melissa Perkins
TEACHER REPRESENTATIVE
Melissa has worked with children since 2000. She started at Space Coast Discovery in 2002 as a volunteer and then became employed in 2003, over 23 years ago. Melissa is a certified Child Development Associate. She is a dedicated early childhood educator passionate about helping young children learn, grow, and thrive. She enjoys creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where every child feels valued and encouraged to reach their full potential. With a caring heart and committed to lifelong learning, Melissa believes that strong relationships with children and families are a foundation of a successful preschool experience. Outside of work, she enjoys being out in nature, such as the beach, hiking, or bike riding. She also loves spending time with her three children, family, and friends, learning new things, and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
